Empath Embodiment

Empaths can feel the emotions of others as easily if not more so than their own, so catching the moods of others is a given. Until it isn’t. Are you ready to transform your sensitivity into the superpower it is?

Catching Feelings

For some, the phrase “catching feelings” means developing unwanted emotions for someone. For empaths, it means something quite different. If you identify as a mood-catcher, maybe even to the extent that you avoid others because you don’t want to feel their emotions and overwhelm yourself in the process, this post is for you.

I used to make great efforts to avoid crowds, unless they were celebratory ones. Experiencing the emotions of 20,000 happy concert goers felt very different from being stuck on a long line in a crowded mall, back when Black Friday was an in-person event.

But I was powerless when it came to the people I loved and wanted to share time with - like my mom. We were so close, and so enmeshed, while I was growing up that I could tell what she was feeling as she drove down the block toward our house.

Sometimes, I’d dart out the back door before her arrival, so as not to catch her mood!

She caught mine just as easily - until the day she didn’t.

Snoopy Rock Surprise

We were overlooking Snoopy Rock in Sedona that historic day, and for the first time on that magical trip, I was grumpy. This had everything to do with how much more commercialized and crowded Sedona had become since my last time there.

My mom quietly listened as I lamented the changes in a litany of complaints. She didn’t try to stop me, in fear of catching my negativity and mood. Instead, when I came up for air, she simply gave me something much better to breathe in.

“Just look at Snoopy and be happy,” she said with a Sedona-zen smile.

I laughed and returned to the present moment, a happy one indeed. I realized I’d been wasting my energy on something I couldn’t control instead of appreciating the beautiful and incredibly special day with my mom. We’d always had a thing for Snoopy and her playful guidance brought me to just how magical that moment was. Crowds and all.

From that moment on, whenever one of us began to slip down a rabbit hole of negativity, the other would repeat her classic Snoopy line. It almost never failed!

No Boundaries Required

For years, I wondered how my mom had stayed so present with me that day, instead of catching my mood. I’d always believed the trick to not catching emotions was avoiding crowds and people who were passionately expressing ones I didn’t want to feel!

I thought boundaries were the key.

I was wrong! (And so is most of the psychology world!)

There is a much easier and more effective way to stop feeling the emotions and energies of others: embodiment!

Embodiment practices allow empaths to experience our superpowers - such as profound intuition, creativity, and ability to connect deeply with others - without draining ourselves in the process.

Wait, but my mom? Embodied? Yes. On that day, she most certainly was. We had just taken a long hike and having never been to Sedona before, she was entirely present with the stunning beauty of nature there!

The Power of Embodiment

If you are taking on the emotions of others, you don’t need stronger boundaries. You need embodiment!

Hiking and connecting with nature are great ways to embody, as are breathwork and yoga. There are many more, and many ways to get the most out of each embodiment practice.

I will be teaching several of these life-changing practices that only take a few minutes a day, as a bonus for all who pre-order The Relationship Ride.
